Life is just relentless. Funny how the music so often comes out reflecting exactly how each and every day feels at that moment. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] It’s been nearly 2 months since I managed to finish anything new. A combination of a very busy time at work, home, and finishing off my Masters degree (now complete, hooray!). Then when I did get something started, GarageBand decided to screw everything up for me and delete half the tracks I’d created when I thought [...] This is my latest song, written and recorded on Sunday 21st of September. I started off with something quite different in mind, but once I got going, it kinda took on a life of its own. It has a nice time-change mid-way through which takes it in a slightly different direction, and as a song of [...] Came together in a couple of hours on a wet, miserable, crap saturday afternoon, that’s supposedly at the tail end of summer, but it might as well be deep mid-winter the way the weather is going. So I put this together, and it’s a helluva lot more upbeat than I was actually feeling, which is odd [...] I put this first up last week, but havn’t actually had the time to put in an entry for it. This started as one song, but then grew naturally into 2. It’s been quite some effort to get the arrangement just how I like it, and bringing all the pieces together, but i think it’s fresh, original, and has a pop-like upbeat feel, whilst [...] I wanted to finish off “Inversions” with a Cover (as each of collection so far, has been made out of 9 original tracks and 1 cover) – but I’d been looking for ages for the right song, that I put my own twist on, that I could actually learn and play, and that fitted in [...] Been working on this latest one for about a week now – had to really rush to finish it today, wanted it finished before I leave for Holiday. Genuinely pleased with the result, has a nice fat sound overall – the solo is probably the clearest sign that I was running out of time at [...] This is really, really weird. I suspect most people who hear this are going to hate it. The underlying rythmn track is one of the earliest riff’s I ever wrote (we’re talking 13/14 years old I guess) – and it was quite heavy, my main influences at that tender age being stuff like Metallica and [...] I had a flurry in May, sometimes putting together 2 tracks a week, but my latest effort has taken 3 weeks just on it’s own to really come together. Finally nailed it yesterday as well – it’s a bit of an epic, both in terms of duration, and content I think – so I’m really [...] There’s inadvertently been a bit of an Ian M. Banks obsession taking route in my current music labelling – I’m currently reading “The Player Of Games” by Banks (superb bloody book by the way) for about the fourth time in total – and really enjoying it – it’s definitely one of my favourite all time [...] The hint here is in the title – I wanted to try and do something to emulate one of my all time favourite Bands particuarly fantastic style – that of Dream Theater. This is my tribute to them. If your familiar with Dream Theater, you’ll surely recognise the influence. Anyway, this is otherwise quite different [...] A very quick song this one, a bit of an experiment for me, but the intention was something gentle akin to “Walking Home”. Unfortunately, my work life balance is generally a bit screwed up, and trying to ensure I could be all things to all people was making the whole thing a little less than fun. I was quite shocked, as I honestly wasn’t aware anybody cared – so enough of my own self congratulation There are a couple of reasons why I havn’t been recording in recent months – aside from being [...] I’ve stumbled since song 9, and not really had anything new in mind for over a month now. As I’m particuarly pleased with both of them, that’s a shame. So…. Recording a cover might seem a little strange, but I find it a useful excercise in learning how to use GarageBand, how to get the right sounds, deconstructing anothers band songs, and seeing what kind of final outcome I can achieve. Didn’t quite come out as I intended (far more upbeat and bouncy than original envisioned to be honest), but it benefits from being played _real_ loud, and is kinda fun, if not too serious. I like the middle break, where I switched to some previously unused effects to get a real retro crunch [...] Turns out some guys at work are in a band….checked out some of their stuff and it was pretty good, so I thought I’d give em a link.
